There once sailed a ship through a merciless gale,
No harbour ahead and no wind in her sail,
The men drew their straws in the lantern light pale,
To see who’d feed the crew.
Soon came the turn of the cabin boy thin,
He drew the short straw with a trembling chin,
He begged them for mercy, but hunger would win,
Then judgment came in port.
*** The year is 1884. A Royal Navy ship sinks on the high seas. Three sailors and the cabin boy survive in a lifeboat. There is no land in sight and the men are exhausted. After a week, the crew members agree to draw straws to decide which of them is to be killed and eaten by the rest. The cabin boy draws the short straw but refuses to accept his fate. Regardless, the crew members kill and eat him against his will. Days later, the lifeboat is found and brought to land. The authorities hear of the tale, and the sailors are brought before a court.
